ABOUT POPPY

Medill School of Journalism, Northwestern '19

I was a volunteer for the Rio2016 Summer Olympic Games. During my stay in Rio, I was lucky to be living with a local family who allowed me to witness and experience Brazilian traditions, favela culture and most importantly, the hidden side of the Olympics. I learned that behind the majestic stadiums and sporting glory, there lies a darker side.

I became curious to find out what Olympics meant to the local people in Rio and what happens to an Olympic city after the Games is over.

With the help of NU's Undergrad Research Office, I came up with a project proposal and was awarded the URG research grant.

I returned and spent 8 weeks in Rio de Janeiro conducting a multimedia journalism project on the aftermath of the Olympics on Vila Autodrómo, a favela that was destroyed during the Olympic development.
